Marie Knaggs writes: "This photograph was taken on the football field in Merrington Lane, in the background is the old winding tower and the factories. It was taken on Coronation day June 1953. The women of Merrington Lane organised this event also a fancy dress for the adults and races for the children with small prizes. "A tea was held in the back yard of Lizzie Taylor's home. She lived in a house on the corner of Parkin and Foundry Street, which years early had been The Railway Inn. Some of the children were given a Coronation Mug, the older girls received a hankie and the older boys a pen. I do remember the “Lane”, as we called it had bunting and flags across the street. The Hearts of Oak pub was the venue for a tea party for the older residents of the Lane and a photo was taken of them outside the pub. If I remember correctly Lizzie Taylor was the only person in Parkin Street to have a Television and the children were allowed to watch the coronation procession." |
