| Comments: | Photo kindly submitted by Fred Paton, he comments: "David Lewis, son of a Welsh miner from Maesteg who came to Durham in the 1870’s. He was my grandfather, lived in Church Street opposite the works and was, I understand, a keen amateur boxer at Spennymoor Settlement in his younger days. This photograph is of him in his 70’s and was taken at the rear of his home in Tyne Crescent. "He was blind in his right eye having been splashed with battery acid while working with the old lead acid accumulators in the rear of Cator’s Electrical shop in the High Street. The accumulators were used to power the old domestic wireless sets and were taken to Cator’s for replacement and re-charge. As I remember it the shop was located in the Town Hall block near the walk through." |
