Arthur Dowdell's Funeral Procession through King Street, Spennymoor, 9th July 1914. Arthur worked for Spennymoor Urban District Council as a Sanitary Inspector or 'Inspector of Nuisances' which was a forerunner of today's Environmental Health Officer. Arthur died on 7th Jul 1914, two days earlier. The funeral service took place at St. Andrew's Church. It's not known why a photograph was taken of the procession - possibly because Arthur may have been a well known / well respected figure in the town. This is another photograph taken by H. Osguthorpe, whose shop can be seen in the photograph with his name painted on the side wall. |
